Bandwidth - Bandwidth is the amount of data transmitted or received per unit of time. How much can you download off the internet in a specific amount of time. Usually measured in kilobits or megabits.

Browser - The software that is used to view the internet. There are two major brands available. Netscape and Internet Explorer (Microsoft). If you have AOL, then you are using Internet Explorer commonly referred to as IE.

Cable - Cable Internet Access. This is fairly new. Your local Cable Company most likely, today, offers access to the internet through fiber-optic cable. This type of connection offers high-speed connections tot he internet. There are no telephone numbers to dial. Which means no busy signals. No second telephone line, etc. And surfing the web is much faster. You don't have to wait for pictures and graphics to appear on your screen. Cable is cheaper than DSL but has some disadvantages over DSL. Yet, I prefer Cable.

Cookie - A cookie is a file that a website puts on your computer to track your web viewing. It also stores passwords to websites that you belong to so you don't have to always type in your password.

Desktop - This has two meanings. First, it refers to the screen area of your monitor. It includes your wallpaper, your task bar and your icons. Second, it can refer to your computer that sits on your desk. Rather than a tower which sits on your floor, The main component of the computer.

Domain Name - What ever goes between www and  .com. for example. Amazon would be the domain name.

Download - This is a very misunderstood term. Most thing download means to install something into your computer. Like I hear a lot, "download from my CD Rom". Download actually means to take information such as, a program, text, pictures, etc from the internet and put it in your computer. some programs you can then install into the computer. It is most practical to download something  to your desktop for easy locating when it is finished.

DSL - Digital Subscriber Line. In plain English,  the internet over your telephone line without using your telephone line. (What?) Basically, this means you can receive & make calls while on the Internet. It is also like Cable in that it is fast. It also has some advantages over Cable like bandwidth. But it is also more expensive then cable. Yet, I prefer Cable.

Hyperlink - Refers to a word, group or words or a picture graphic, that you when click on it, it will take you to another web page or web site (or picture)

ISP - Internet Service Provider. Just that. It provides you with access to the internet. Usually through a phone line. But new ways are popping up such as cable. (see cable)

Thumbnail - A thumbnail is a small click able  picture scaled down from its original size to conserve bandwidth and download time. It's used to preview pictures so the user can choose what picture he/she would like to see.

Tower - A term used to denote your actual computer. It usually sits on the floor.
